Synopsis

"Hacking at Leaves" documents artist and hazmat-suit aficionado Johannes Grenzfurthner as he attempts to come to terms with the United States' colonial past, Navajo tribal history, and the hacker movement. The story hones in on a small tinker space in Durango, Colorado, that made significant contributions to worldwide COVID relief efforts. But things go awry when Uncle Sam interferes with the film's production.

Johannes Grenzfurthner captivates audiences with his unique blend of intriguing, often surreal narratives, merging fact and fiction in his work as an award-winning artist, filmmaker, author, and performer. He is the founder and artistic director of monochrom, a renowned art and theory group. Notable recent works include the films "Masking Threshold" (2021) and "Solvent" (2024), with more projects underway. Johannes also lectures on transmedia arts and communication theory at universities in Austria and Germany and organizes events like Arse Elektronika and Roboexotica.
