Synopsis

The German Sisters (1981) by Margarethe von Trotta is an award-winning drama inspired by the biographies of sisters Christiane and Gudrun Ensslin. While Christiane worked as a journalist and women's rights activist, her sister joined the Red Army Faction (RAF). The film explores their contrasting life paths and the political tensions of the time. Von Trotta wrote the screenplay and achieved international acclaim with this work. She became the first female director to win the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. The film was released in German cinemas on September 25, 1981.
