Parish
Back to listSynopsis
Shot on 16mm film in the Dublin suburb where I grew up. "Parish" is an hybrid documentary film exploring the representation of community identity through fact, fiction, biography, myth, and memoir. The film follows a diverse group people as they come together to walk the edges of their common lands and learn the boundaries of their community. The practice is called “beating the bounds,” and the purpose is to create a shared mental map, a living record of the parish. They sing songs and tell stories to delineate the landmarks that separated one parish from another. Here tales of suicide, murder and madness coexists with narratives of acceptance, generosity and empathy. Myths, both aboriginal and foreign, have equal footing and combine to form new, better, stronger myths. Psychogeography by this group's definition is listening to place and hearing its polyphony – understanding that place can hold infinite stories and give each one its due.
