Synopsis

The long-term conflict with Russia has left its mark in Ukraine, and families and children have been driven into social hardship, alcoholism and poverty.

In the years 2015–2021, director Simon Lereng Wilmont traveled between Eastern Ukraine and his native Denmark to document children's everyday lives in the shadow of the war. His honest approach to the children makes for a film that truly tears at the heart.

In the powerful documentary «A House Made of Splinters», we follow three children who have been placed in a temporary orphanage. The house is filled with laughter, despair, loneliness and hopeful phone calls. We get to witness close moments of children's ability to keep their spirits up - despite grief and loss.

About the director:
Simon Lereng Wilmont is a Danish director who has made a number of award-winning documentaries. The film «The Distant Barking of Dogs» (2017) won best debut documentary at the world premiere at IDFA. For «A House Made of Splinters», Wilmont won the director's award at the Sundance film festival.
