Synopsis

Some people go to therapy to unravel old traumas. This Moroccan family uses puppetry. 

Screenings

Asmae only has one picture of herself from her youth, and she is pretty sure it is not even her in the picture. To learn the truth about the picture´s origin and all the other secrets her family carries, she and her father build a miniature model of her childhood home in Casablanca. 

As the family members are confronted with scenes from the past, the history is linked to  larger national trauma. «The Mother of All Lies» deals with the lack of recognition, historical archives and images in a unique and surreal way. 

About the director:
Asmae El Moudir is a director, writer and producer from Morocco. «The Mother of All Lies» is her second feature film as she debuted in 2020 with «The Postcard». During the film festival in Cannes 2023, she was awarded the prize for best director in the side program Un Certain Regard. The film is also shortlisted for the Oscars, in the category best international feature film.
