To follow her dream of acting, Hiam Abbass moves from her mother and seven sisters in Palestine. Thirty years later, she is now known for successes such as «Succession» and «Blade Runner 2049» (2017), yet the decision to move still affects the family.

Her daughter Lina has also chosen a career in film, and with her next project she intends to ask all the questions about her mother’s big choice. Who would she have become if her mother hadn’t moved? What has happened to all the sisters who stayed?

In «Bye Bye Tiberias» mother and daughter return to their hometown to confront a past of exile, secession and heartbreak. With the help of private recordings from annual family gatherings and archive material from 1984, the result is a strong documentary about heritage and identity.
